General Background

Attorney Loitz was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois and grew up in Thornton, Illinois. His parents and most of his family are working class, blue collar people. Attorney Loitz was a union member in Illinois while working his way through college.

Military Experience

Scott’s father was a U.S. Navy veteran and many of his uncles and cousins served in various branches of the military in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.  Scott attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa participating in United States Army R.O.T.C.  In addition to R.O.T.C. he served in various leadership positions with his fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon while also working his way through college. After graduating cum laude from Drake University,  Scott was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and took a year off before starting law school to attend the United States Army’s Transportation School at Ft. Eustis, Virginia. He then was assigned to the U.S. Army Reserve’s 315th Area Support Group in Chicago, Illinois.

Attorney Loitz joined the 685th Transportation Company, Cargo Transfer, in Hobart, Indiana once he started law school, serving as both Executive Officer and Platoon Leader. Scott continued to actively serve while attending Valparaiso University Law School. After his first year of law school during the summer of 1993, Scott earned the Army Achievement Medal for his leadership during Annual Training in Germersheim, Germany. Attorney Loitz continued his military service for the first few years of his law practice before making the tough decision to leave the military to have more time to focus on his family and legal career.

Education, Experience, Distinguishment and Awards

Attorney Loitz attended Elementary school in Thornton, Illinois and High School in South Holland, Illinois. Scott started mowing lawns when he was ten and continued to build that business as well as busing tables at the Thornton American Legion Friday fish fries through grade and high school. Scott worked through high school as a bricklayer laborer in the summer and cashier and stock boy at Koch’s Market during the school year.

While attending Law School Scott was a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America Mock Trial team and competed against other law schools. He also served in the Criminal Clinic representing clients. This experience gave Scott a solid foundation in trial work.

After graduating from law school Scott began representing those who had been injured by the negligence of others and within six months of getting his law license was in the court room trying cases. He was also involved in Inns of Court and the Lake County Bar Association.

After several years of prosecuting personal injury cases, Scott transitioned to defense of personal injury, and commercial claims.

In 2002, Scott joined the South Bend law firm Jones Obenchain, LLP, becoming partner while continuing to try jury trials across Northern Indiana.

While at Jones Obenchain Scott participated in the South Bend / Mishawaka Chamber of Commerce Leadership program. Atttorney Loitz and also received the 40 under 40 award for young professionals.

Attorney Loitz’s insurance defense experience allowed him to further hone both his trial skills as well as learning the insurance claim evaluation process.  This insight provided Scott with the knowledge of how insurance companies investigate and value claims as well as information that insurance companies use to defend claims to limit how much they pay to injured people.

Scott learned how insurance companies use information from people’s medical records as well as information learned during the litigation process to defend cases both before and during trial.

Now that Attorney Loitz is again representing injured people, he is able to use his insurance defense background to best present his clients claims and maximize their recovery.

Scott continues his lifelong blue-collar work ethic, working hard on behalf of his clients to make sure that they get the best representation possible for their case. He keeps them informed throughout the case and with his insurance defense experience, can explain how certain information and developments during litigation might be used by the insurance company during settlement negotiations and at trial. This information allows Attorney Loitz to provide his clients with an honest assessment of their case in order to have as much information as possible to decide whether to attempt to settle their case or go to trial.

Scott has been admitted to practice in all of the Superior and Circuit Courts within the State of Indiana, the Federal Courts for the Northern and Southern District of Indiana and the Federal Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit which encompasses Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. Nonetheless, given his experience representing clients in the Northern Indiana area (Lake, Porter, LaPorte, St. Joseph, Elkhart, Marshall, Lagrange, Kosciusko and Noble Counties) a larger percentage of his case load is focused in these areas.

Personal Activities

Scott is married and has three children. When his kids were younger, Scott coached all of them in baseball and softball for over 10 years. Attorney Loitz and his family love the outdoors and spent summers when the family was young tent camping and exploring in Acadia, Grand Canyon, Glacier, Rocky Mountain, Yellowstone and Yosemite National Parks.

Scott also believes in fitness and regularly does cross fit and yoga style workouts. In his spare time, Scott brews beer.
